IBTS

Sabbatical Options

IBTS welcomes sabbatical visitors. Guests often stay for a few days through to a few weeks as an integral part of their extended sabbatical time. Those involved in long-term study, such as research students and academics may come on a regular basis for periods of writing and research. Sabbatical guests are welcome to participate in the daily rhythm of life in Baptist House including prayer and coffee in the morning and sharing lunchtime together. For many this provides a helpful structure to the day and an opportunity for fellowship and reflection during their sabbatical experience with the Baptist community in Amsterdam.

Why a Sabbatical?

For many involved in Christian ministry, sabbatical is an integral and important element of their spiritual journey. It is a time to step out of the immediacy and pressure of ministry, to reflect and pray, and to be refreshed. For many it is also a time to read and to study. However, sabbaticals are not restricted to those in vocational ministry, but can be a time of renewal for those in many walks of life.

Why IBTS?

An integral part of IBTS’s ministry is to support people in times of reflection, learning and research. The Library provides a quiet and restful space for reading and research and our librarian is available to provide assistance when needed. Simple, but comfortable accommodation is available in Helwys House which is situated right next door to Baptist House, enabling guests the privacy of their own space, and the possibility to join with the life of Baptist House as and when they choose.

If arranged in advance, it is possible for IBTS to offer some support in guiding study if desired. And if a visit coincides with an IBTS conference or event then guests will be invited to participate wherever appropriate.

Baptist House is in easy walking distance to a number of beautiful parks and canal-side walks. There is also easy access by bike or public transport to the centre of Amsterdam and the museum quarter.

What are the options?

If you are planning a sabbatical in Amsterdam you are welcome to use the facilities at Baptist House in a way that best fits your own needs. You may arrange your own accommodation or enquire about the availability of Helwys House. To make an enquiry please send an email to the office. Enquiries are warmly welcomed!

Accommodation costs are indicated in the information about Helwys House. Otherwise there are no financial costs associated with taking a sabbatical at IBTS. For those who do want to make a financial contribution, gifts will be gratefully received for the IBTS Scholarship Fund which provides support for students and researchers from less-well resourced areas of the world.

Please contact the office for more information on Sabbatical options.
